Despite a court ruling that decriminalized magic mushrooms last year, picking, possessing and selling the hallucinogenic drugs is still illegal in Canada. That’s because the mushroom kingdom is full of poisonous varieties and some contain varying amounts of psilocybin, which has a wide range of effects. Ingesting the drug can cause visual, auditory and tactile hallucinations as well as anxiety, fear, nausea, muscle twitches, elevated heart rate and high blood pressure. It can also trigger unsettling episodes that are sometimes known as “bad trips.”

RCMP staff Sgt. Kris Clark tells Postmedia that the fungi are not a priority for officers, who are focused on dealing with the heroin crisis and organized crime. He says he’s aware that there are mushrooms for sale at some stores, but he doesn’t know where the buyers get them or how much they pay. He adds that he doesn’t think it’s appropriate to talk about the price of psilocybin, given its status as a controlled substance.

Mushrooms grow in abundance around the southern Vancouver Island region and the Queen Charlotte Islands, particularly after a heavy rain in fall. Most of them are saprophytic, living off decaying plant matter, but a few, such as the common wavy cap (Psilocybe cyanescens), are mycorrhizal and can be found in pastures and gardens.

Some people seek a spiritual experience when they pick mushrooms, but many want to learn how to apply the insights gained to their lives and businesses. That’s the niche filled by self-described contemporary shamans Gary Logan and Robert Grover, who offer luxury mushroom experiences that include followup coaching.
